Trump Calls for Interest Rates to Be Cut to 1% or Lower as Fed Raises Rates to 3.75%-4.00%
U.S. President Donald Trump has once again called for American interest rates to be lowered to 1% or lower, a target he is currently the only one proposing. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve has raised the federal funds rate target range to 3.75%-4.00%. After the Fed's rate hike in September, Trump stated that rates should be reduced to 1% or lower, arguing that the U.S. has the best credit in the world and that the economy is increasing investment. He believes that lower financing costs can stimulate business investment, reduce government debt costs, and enhance the competitiveness of the U.S. economy. Fed officials, however, hold a different view. Boston Fed President Collins supports the rate hike and warns that future inflation may be significantly above the 2% target level. She believes that with the labor market still resilient, monetary policy needs to remain restrictive to ensure inflation continues to decline.
