U.S. Trade Deficit Rises to $105.6 Billion in August, Imports Hit Record High

According to data from the U.S. Department of Commerce, the trade deficit in goods and services rose to $105.6 billion in August, an increase of 13.7% from the revised $92.8 billion in July, marking a 17-month high. Imports grew by 4.3% month-on-month to $420.8 billion, setting a new record, while exports only increased by 1.4% to $315.2 billion. The surge in imports was mainly driven by capital goods, with capital goods imports rising by $6.2 billion to $146.4 billion in August, also a record high, fueled by strong demand for advanced semiconductors and industrial machinery related to AI data center construction. Analysts believe that the Trump administration's attempts to reduce imports and narrow the trade deficit through increased tariffs have been offset by robust consumer spending and corporate capital expenditures in the U.S., particularly the investment boom in AI computing infrastructure. In the absence of domestic alternatives, companies still need to source high-end chips, servers, and industrial equipment from overseas, with tariffs primarily altering suppliers and trade routes rather than reducing overall import demand. The surge in imports is expected to continue to weigh on U.S. GDP in the third quarter, but strong private consumption and corporate capital spending may still drive annualized GDP growth to remain above 3% in the third quarter.
