When you open a futures position, one setting quietly decides how much of your account is on the line: the margin mode. Two options are standard — isolated margin and cross margin — and the difference is entirely about how much of your balance backs the position. Choosing wrong can turn a single bad trade into an account-wide loss, so this is worth understanding before you trade.

    How Each Mode Works

Isolated margin assigns a fixed, ring-fenced amount of collateral to a single position. If the trade goes against you, only that assigned margin can be lost. When it is exhausted, that one position is liquidated — and the rest of your account is untouched.

Cross margin uses your entire available balance as shared collateral for the position (or positions). Losses can draw on your whole balance, which means the position can absorb larger adverse moves before liquidation — but if it does liquidate, far more of your account is at stake.

A worked example. You have 500 USDT and open a position needing 100 USDT margin:

    • Isolated: only the 100 USDT is at risk. A big adverse move liquidates the position and you lose 100; the other 400 is safe.
    • Cross: all 500 USDT backs the position. The extra 400 acts as a buffer that pushes the liquidation price further away — but a severe move can now consume far more than 100 before you are stopped out.

    Which Should You Use?

There is no universally "correct" answer, but there are clear tendencies:

    • Isolated margin is generally better while learning and for defined-risk trades. It caps your loss per position to a number you set in advance, which makes risk easy to reason about. The trade-off: a thinner buffer means the position liquidates sooner.
    • Cross margin reduces the chance of a single position liquidating (more collateral behind it) and is used by some experienced traders for hedging or managing multiple positions. The trade-off: it exposes your whole balance, so a single severe move can do far more damage.

For most beginners, isolated margin is the safer default precisely because it makes the worst case explicit and contained.

The Risk Section — Read This Carefully

    • Cross margin can drain your whole balance. Its bigger buffer is not free protection — it is more of your account at risk. A single violent move can liquidate far more than one position's worth.
    • Isolated margin liquidates sooner. Its tight buffer means a smaller adverse move ends the position. That is the cost of containment.
    • Neither mode reduces leverage risk. Margin mode changes how much of your account is exposed, not the fundamental danger of leverage and liquidation.

Choosing a margin mode is risk management, not a profit lever — it guarantees nothing about the outcome of the trade.

    A Practical Next Step

Test both modes with virtual money first. WEEX offers a demo futures mode where you can open the same trade in isolated and in cross margin and watch how differently the liquidation price and account exposure behave. When trading real funds, most beginners are best served by isolated margin, low leverage, and a stop-loss on every position.

Download the WEEX app, open futures, and compare the two modes in demo first.

    FAQ

    Q. What is the main difference between isolated and cross margin? A. Isolated risks only the margin assigned to one position; cross risks your whole available balance as shared collateral.

    Q. Which is safer for beginners? A. Isolated margin is generally the safer default because it caps the loss per position to a preset amount, making risk easy to control.

    Q. Why would anyone use cross margin? A. Its larger collateral buffer lowers the chance of a single position liquidating, and it helps some experienced traders manage hedges or multiple positions — at the cost of exposing more of the account.

    Q. Can I switch modes on an open position? A. This depends on the platform and sometimes on whether the position is already open. Check your platform's rules; practising in a demo account is a safe way to learn its behaviour.
