Fake RWA Commentary Temporarily Spread as His Opinion

Brian Chesky, the CEO of Airbnb (commonly known as AirBnB), revealed that his X account was hacked and unauthorized posts promoting the tokenization of RWA (real-world assets) were published.

AI-Generated Tokenization Commentary Viewed Over 700,000 Times

The unauthorized thread was posted on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, claiming that tokenizing buildings, bonds, and funds could facilitate the division, trading, and settlement of assets. It also mentioned that Robinhood is focusing on tokenized assets.

The post was viewed over 700,000 times and was featured in multiple media outlets as Chesky's perspective on cryptocurrency. However, after regaining access to his account on July 17, he clarified that the post was not authored by him.

Chesky posted, "To the person who hacked my account earlier this week, thank you for the new cryptocurrency followers." He humorously added that he would be a very disappointing follower to the new cryptocurrency users who followed him.

The AI detection platform Pangram reported that the unauthorized post was determined to be generated by AI. While the text exhibited uniform syntactic patterns mimicking Chesky's speaking style, there were also voices questioning the post's credibility due to unnatural expressions.

Caution Against Account Takeovers Without Financial Fraud

This post did not contain elements typically used in general account takeovers, such as meme coin promotions, token sales, wallet addresses, giveaways, or investment links.

Instead, it provided a calm and detailed explanation of the tokenization of RWA, which actual executives are discussing. This combination of the credibility of a verified account and timely content led to the post being perceived as genuine.

Airbnb reported the breach to X, and X responded by securing the account and removing the unauthorized posts. The method by which the attacker gained access to the account and the identity of the perpetrator remain unclear.

Additionally, no connection between the unauthorized posts and token issuance or financial fraud has been confirmed. This incident suggests that the misuse of celebrity accounts may not only aim for direct financial theft but also for the dissemination of information disguised as the individual's views.
