The Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) of Taiwan released estimates on July 31, showing that the real GDP in the first half of 2026 grew by 13.72% year-on-year, marking the strongest performance for the first half in 50 years. The second quarter saw a year-on-year growth of 12.92%, the fastest second-quarter growth in 39 years. This result exceeded the May forecast by 2.09 percentage points, driven not only by strong AI-related exports but also by better-than-expected private investment and consumption.

These figures continue the rapid growth seen in the first quarter. Preliminary statistics released by DGBAS at the end of May indicated that the real GDP grew by 14.55% year-on-year in the first quarter, with actual exports of goods and services increasing by 35.76% and the value added in manufacturing rising by 26.18%, primarily driven by semiconductors, computers, electronics, and optical products. Global cloud providers are expanding AI infrastructure, which has translated into increased demand for advanced chips, servers, networks, and related components within Taiwan's production system.

The second quarter exhibited a broader growth base. Officials from DGBAS stated through the Central News Agency that the dollar-denominated goods exports grew by 43.73% year-on-year; private consumption increased by 5.88%, the fastest in 11 quarters. Active stock market transactions have led to increased demand for financial services and wealth effects, while the recovery in automobile sales and an increase in outbound tourism have also contributed to higher consumption. This indicates that the current growth is not solely reflected in export figures, as some income and asset price effects have already reached domestic demand.

However, the 13.72% figure also includes significant base and cyclical factors, and should not be mechanically extrapolated. Year-on-year growth rates compare to the same period last year, while the timing of AI equipment deliveries, inventory, and exports may cause quarterly fluctuations. Taiwan's economy is relatively small and has a high concentration of technology manufacturing; when external orders grow rapidly, the overall volume can be significantly elevated. Conversely, when clients digest inventory or capital expenditures slow down, the reverse impact can be even greater.

How AI Demand Can Simultaneously Drive Exports, Investment, and Consumption

Taiwan occupies several key positions in the AI hardware supply chain. Wafer foundries are responsible for advanced processes, packaging and testing connect computing chips with high-bandwidth storage, electronic manufacturing service companies assemble servers, and component manufacturers provide cooling, power supplies, enclosures, and networking equipment. When cloud providers increase their budget for a data center, it does not merely result in a single chip order, but spreads along this industrial network.

As orders increase, companies need to expand facilities, purchase equipment, and increase R&D investments, forming fixed capital. Production and exports then generate profits, wages, and bonuses, improving the performance of publicly listed companies and further influencing household consumption. The 5.88% growth in private consumption in the second quarter indicates that external demand is being transmitted to domestic demand through channels such as employment, assets, and service transactions, which is a more solid aspect of this round of data compared to merely "grabbing exports."

The growth in imports should not be simply viewed as negative. Taiwan's production of high-end electronic products requires imports of energy, raw materials, and equipment; export booms are often accompanied by rising imports. To assess the quality of growth, one should observe whether imports consist of consumer goods or capital equipment, how much added value is generated from final exports, and whether corporate investments can enhance future production capacity. Simply comparing monthly export and import amounts can easily overlook the true operation of the supply chain economy.

AI has also changed the traditional electronics cycle. Demand for smartphones and personal computers relies more on replacements, while AI data centers are dominated by capital expenditures from a few large clients, with individual project scales being larger and technological iterations occurring more rapidly. As a result, Taiwanese companies achieve higher growth but also face risks related to client concentration and product switching. A change in a generation of chips or server architecture may quickly benefit some suppliers while causing older production lines to depreciate faster.

The Greatest Risk Behind High Growth is Concentration, Not Just Appealing Numbers

The first risk is a slowdown in global AI capital expenditures. Current demand is based on cloud providers' belief that future models and applications will generate sufficient revenue. If the returns from data centers fall short of expectations, clients may delay orders. Taiwan's export and manufacturing growth is highly exposed to this investment cycle, so the high growth rate of 13.72% also implies facing a higher comparison base next year.

The second risk involves capacity and energy constraints. Advanced manufacturing requires stable electricity, water, land, and engineering talent. When demand rises rapidly, companies can expand production; however, if infrastructure cannot keep up, costs and delivery times will increase. To serve overseas clients, some companies are also increasing foreign investments, which helps to get closer to markets and diversify geopolitical risks, but may alter domestic capital formation and supply chain division of labor.

The third risk arises from trade and geopolitical policies. Advanced chips are both commercial products and subjects of export controls and national security policies. Changes in tariffs, technology licensing, or client regional restrictions can all affect order pathways. The more companies concentrate on high-end AI hardware, the more they need to prepare production capacity and compliance plans for different policy scenarios.

Therefore, while Taiwan's current growth is commendable, the more important question is whether it can convert AI orders into sustained productivity improvements. If the boom leads to more R&D, talent, and local service innovations, the economy will gain benefits that surpass the hardware cycle; if growth relies mainly on a few export products and asset prices, fluctuations will also be amplified. The 13.72% figure is an exceptionally strong interim report card, but it also serves as a stress test for industrial diversification, energy supply, and risk management capabilities.
