Telegram Crypto Coin: What is TON and How to Buy Toncoin
The Telegram crypto coin is increasingly associated with Toncoin: it is not just a cryptocurrency for transfers, but the internal coin of the TON ecosystem, where services, applications, and payment tools operate based on the blockchain of The Open Network.
What is the TON Cryptocurrency
Toncoin is the native coin of the blockchain platform TON, also known as The Open Network. The idea for the project originated within the Telegram team: brothers Pavel Durov and Nikolai Durov planned to create a large-scale blockchain infrastructure and link it to the messenger.
Initially, the project revolved around the cryptocurrency Gram. In 2018, Telegram announced the launch of a blockchain that was to become the technological foundation for this coin. However, in 2020, development was halted due to claims from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The regulator, representing the United States, effectively blocked the previous launch model.
After that, Pavel Durov withdrew from further participation in the project, and the code and network development transitioned to an open community of developers. Later, the TON Foundation team acquired an official domain where information about the blockchain project was published.
Today, TON is no longer just a coin. An ecosystem of services has formed around the network, where Toncoin is used for payments, fees, and rewards. In essence, it is closer to infrastructure assets like Ethereum than to a regular payment instrument. At the same time, like Bitcoin, Toncoin remains a volatile crypto asset, with its price depending on demand, news, and the overall market situation.
Key Services of the TON Ecosystem
- TON Apps - decentralized applications for the TON network. Among them are wallets, games, exchanges, social services, and other tools.
- TON Storage - a decentralized data storage that operates on the principle of distributing files across multiple nodes. This model increases resilience to failures and attacks.
- TON Sites - a platform for websites that are hosted and operate in a decentralized network. This reduces dependence on individual servers.
- TON DNS - a domain name system within The Open Network. It allows the use of understandable addresses instead of complex blockchain addresses. Such domains belong to their owners and cannot be seized in the usual way.
- TON Payments - a payment system based on TON for fast transfers in Toncoin. Its strengths are high speed and no fees. In September 2021, the blockchain processed 55,000 transactions per second, setting a world record.
- TON Diamonds - a marketplace for digital assets where one can trade collectibles, invest, and manage assets. Creators can monetize content through the sale of NFTs.
- TON Proxy - a network of proxy servers for greater privacy. It helps hide real IP addresses and other identifying information when working with services.
- TON Services - a set of decentralized services and tools for dApps, tokens, DeFi, NFTs, and other products within TON.
All these areas are interconnected through Toncoin. The coin is used within the network, so demand for it depends not only on market expectations but also on how actively the ecosystem itself is growing.
What Cryptocurrencies are Found in Telegram
In Telegram, the most frequently discussed cryptocurrency is TON, as Toncoin is linked to the ecosystem of The Open Network and is used in services around the messenger. However, users may also encounter other cryptocurrencies.
- TON is the main coin of the TON ecosystem. It is used for transfers, paying fees, and working with applications and services like Fragment.
- USDT is a stablecoin often used as a digital equivalent of the dollar when purchasing cryptocurrency through P2P, exchanges, and exchange services.
- BTC, or Bitcoin, can be found in wallets, bots, and third-party services for storing, buying, or exchanging cryptocurrency.
- ETH, or Ethereum, is more commonly used through third-party Web3 services, exchanges, and bots if they support this network.
Integration is usually set up in one of three ways: through the built-in Telegram Wallet, through bots for exchanges and transfers, or through external services that open from Telegram and connect to the crypto wallet.
Telegram Wallet: How to Use the Wallet and Check the TON Rate
Telegram Wallet is a built-in wallet in Telegram. Through it, you can store cryptocurrency, send and receive transfers, buy assets through the P2P Market, and exchange supported coins.
- Open Telegram and find the "Wallet" section in the side menu.
- Launch the wallet and confirm the account creation.
- To receive TON, open the desired coin and copy the wallet address.
- To send, specify the recipient's address, amount, and confirm the transfer.
- To buy with a bank card, open the P2P Market, select TON, currency, amount, and a suitable payment method.
- Before payment, check the seller's conditions: bank, card type, limits, rate, and fees.
The current rate of TON can be viewed directly in the Telegram Wallet: open the wallet, select Toncoin, and check the price on the coin screen or in the purchase form. Another option is to use bots and services to track rates, such as Wallet, CryptoBot, or xRocket, but always check the name, link, and reputation of the service before connecting.
Cryptocurrency Risks in Telegram and Basic Security
Cryptocurrency in Telegram is convenient, but mistakes can be costly: transfers on the blockchain are usually irreversible, and getting money back after sending it to a scammer is nearly impossible.
- Fraud: fake sellers, counterfeit exchanges, and promises of guaranteed earnings.
- Phishing bots: copies of popular wallets and services that trick users into giving access to their accounts or seed phrases.
- Loss of access: if you lose your account, password, or recovery data, access to funds may be at risk.
- Volatility: the rate of TON, like other crypto assets, can change sharply in a short time.
- Address errors: when transferring, it is important to check the network, address, and amount before confirming the transaction.
- Security: enable two-factor authentication in Telegram, do not send login codes, do not click on suspicious links, and do not store large amounts in services you do not trust.
How TON Differs from Bitcoin and Why It Is Needed by Telegram Users
TON and Bitcoin serve different purposes. Bitcoin was created as a decentralized digital currency and a store of value. TON is more like an infrastructure for applications, payments, subscriptions, domains, NFTs, and other services within The Open Network.
- Technology: Bitcoin operates as a separate blockchain network, while TON develops as a platform for services and applications.
- Purpose: Bitcoin is often used as a standalone crypto asset, while TON is used as a working coin within the ecosystem.
- Speed: TON Payments is focused on fast transfers; in September 2021, the blockchain processed 55,000 transactions per second.
- Fees: TON emphasizes inexpensive and fast operations, especially within payment services.
- Ecosystem: TON is connected to services around Telegram, while Bitcoin is not integrated into the messenger as a separate ecosystem coin.
For regular users, TON can be useful for transfers, paying for Telegram Premium through Fragment, working with TON Apps, purchasing digital assets, and participating in services that are developing around Telegram.
Price of Toncoin and Important Market Events
From the first months of trading, Toncoin has shown noticeable price fluctuations. At the start, the coin traded in a range of approximately $0.54 to $5.83, and the project's prospects remained unclear.
Later, interest in TON began to grow. A particularly notable spike occurred in 2024 when the TON Society community announced a partnership with HumanCode, a company involved in artificial intelligence developments. In April, Toncoin reached a historical maximum, surpassing the $6 mark.
On August 24, 2024, Pavel Durov was detained in Paris at Le Bourget Airport shortly after landing his private jet. The market reacted quickly to this news: Toncoin fell from $6.83 to $5.33, and the market capitalization shrank by more than $3 billion. As a result, TON dropped from 7th to 11th place among cryptocurrencies.
At the time of publication, the price of Toncoin had recovered to approximately $5.67 per coin, with a market capitalization exceeding $14.3 billion. The maximum price was recorded on June 15, 2024, when Toncoin reached $8.17 on exchanges.

Buying TON through Crypto Exchanges
Crypto exchanges help quickly exchange one cryptocurrency for another or buy digital assets for regular money. For beginners, this option often turns out to be easier than an exchange: just choose the direction of the exchange, fill out the application, and pay for it.
In Russia, popular exchanges include 60cek, Prostocash, BestChange, Ferma, BetaTransfer, OneMoment, and others.
Let's analyze the purchase of TON using BestChange as an example.
- Open BestChange.
- In the left table, select the payment method, for example, a Mir card in rubles, and the cryptocurrency TON.
- Look at the list of services that work with this direction.
- In the calculator, specify the amount you plan to spend. This makes it easier to estimate the commission and choose a suitable exchanger.
- On the payment page, fill in the required fields: card number for debiting, address for crediting TON, full name, and email.
- Click <
>. - Transfer money according to the specified details.
- Click <> and wait for TON to arrive at the address on the network.
Bots for Exchange and Earning on Cryptocurrency in Telegram
In Telegram, there are bots through which users buy, sell, transfer cryptocurrency, track rates, or participate in tasks with cryptocurrency rewards.
- Wallet - the built-in Telegram wallet for storing, transferring, buying, and exchanging supported cryptocurrencies.
- CryptoBot - a bot for transfers, checks, exchanges, and receiving payments in cryptocurrency.
- xRocket - a service for transfers, exchanges, and working with cryptocurrency payments in Telegram.
Be especially cautious with bots for earning. Check the link, reviews, and withdrawal conditions, do not send seed phrases and login codes, and do not keep large amounts in unverified services.
How to Pay for Telegram Premium Using TON
TON can be used not only for buying and storing. Through the Fragment platform, you can pay for Telegram Premium - for yourself or another user.
Fragment is the blockchain platform of the Telegram team. It is used to buy and sell profile and channel identifiers, anonymous numbers, and to subscribe to Telegram Premium.
- Open Fragment.
- Click <
> and connect the built-in Telegram wallet.
- Go to the Premium tab.
- Click <
>. - Choose who needs the subscription: yourself or as a gift. For a gift, specify the recipient's username, for example, @anton.
- Choose the subscription duration: 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year.
- Click <
>. - Confirm the transaction in the wallet.
- After payment, the subscription will go to the recipient. If they did not have Premium activated, it will be activated immediately. If the subscription is already active, the new period will start after the current one ends.
Telegram Stars and TON
Telegram Stars is the internal currency of Telegram for paying for digital goods and services within mini-apps and bots. For the average user, this is not the same as Toncoin: Stars are used within Telegram, while TON circulates on the blockchain.
- You can buy Stars in Telegram or through available payment tools if they are supported in your region.
- Direct exchange of Stars for TON and TON for Stars for regular cryptocurrency purchases does not work like a standard exchange.
- Authors and developers who receive Stars in their bots or mini-apps can withdraw rewards through Telegram and Fragment tools, where settlements are linked to TON.
- Before any exchange through a third-party bot, check if the service is indeed linked to Telegram or Fragment, and do not send money to addresses from suspicious chats.
What to Choose: A Brief Comparison of Ways to Buy TON
